The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Iran’s Natanz nuclear enrichment facility was hit during airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel.
IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi said early Saturday that Iranian authorities informed the agency about the attack on the Natanz nuclear site.
According to the UN nuclear watchdog, there has been no increase in radiation levels outside the facility following the strike. The agency also urged all parties involved in the conflict to exercise military restraint to prevent any nuclear-related accident.
“The IAEA has been informed by Iran that the Natanz nuclear site was attacked today,” the agency said in a statement, adding that radiation levels outside the site remain normal.
The Natanz facility is one of Iran’s key nuclear enrichment sites and has been targeted multiple times since the escalation of hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The latest strike marks the fourth reported attack on Iranian nuclear facilities since the beginning of the U.S.-Israeli military offensive in Iran.
The IAEA, a United Nations-backed agency, is responsible for monitoring nuclear programmes worldwide and promoting the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology.
