The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the Nigerian Police Force through education, as plans reach an advanced stage for the take-off of a southern campus of the Police Academy in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Monday after a high-level meeting with the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and other senior police officers in Abuja.
Alausa said the initiative aligns with the agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reposition the police for improved service delivery and enhanced national security.
He explained that discussions focused on infrastructure design and planning for the new Police Academy campus located in Erije, Abeokuta, noting that the President has directed that the institution should commence academic activities between September and November 2026.
According to the minister, the National Universities Commission has been mandated to fast-track resource verification to ensure timely take-off of the campus.
The meeting also reviewed the capacity of over 42 police colleges nationwide, with plans to upgrade them into monotechnics to strengthen technical and professional training within the Force.
Alausa revealed that a presidential waiver already exists to facilitate the transition, while efforts are underway to accredit selected institutions in specialised, industry-relevant courses to boost police capacity.
To drive implementation, three committees were inaugurated, covering resource verification, capacity development for police colleges, and infrastructure development for the new campus. The committees include representatives from the police, education agencies, and intervention bodies such as TETFund.
Also speaking, the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Said Ahmed, commended the initiative and assured the Nigeria Police of the ministry’s full support.
In his remarks, IGP Disu emphasised the critical role of education in addressing challenges across sectors, stating that the Force is committed to introducing courses that will directly enhance personnel efficiency and strengthen national security.
The proposed southern campus is expected to expand training capacity and modernise police education in line with global standards.
