Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for initiating the process to restore more state constituencies in Kogi State, describing the move as a bold step toward deepening democracy and correcting historical imbalances.
The Governor gave the commendation at the INEC stakeholders’ meeting on the restoration of state constituencies held in Lokoja, where he noted that the gathering represents a defining moment in the state’s democratic journey.
According to him, history often unfolds quietly through institutional decisions that shape governance and representation, stressing that the restoration of the affected constituencies is not just a technical exercise, but a moral and constitutional obligation.
Governor Ododo emphasized that fair representation remains the cornerstone of democracy, adding that communities previously denied adequate representation will now have their voices properly reflected in the legislative process.
He assured INEC of the full support of the Kogi State Government in ensuring a smooth, transparent, and credible restoration process, including providing necessary logistics and security.
The Governor also called on stakeholders, community leaders, and residents of the affected areas to cooperate fully with the Commission to guarantee the success of the exercise.
In his remarks, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Independent National Electoral Commission in Kogi State Shehu Abdulwahab said the meeting was convened to engage stakeholders and gather critical input needed for the delineation and eventual restoration of the constituencies.
He explained that the process would involve extensive fieldwork, data verification, and consultations to ensure that the exercise reflects current realities and aligns with legal requirements.
The stakeholders meeting attracted representatives from security agencies, traditional institutions, political parties, civil society organizations, and community groups, all of whom pledged support for the exercise.
The restoration of the constituencies follows judicial pronouncements and is expected to significantly enhance political inclusion and grassroots representation in Kogi State ahead of future elections
