The G100, a coalition of concerned Nigerians, has concluded the first phase of consultations with leaders of six opposition parties as part of efforts to build a united political front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman, the group said it had consulted key opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as well as Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

The G100 also disclosed that it engaged the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The coalition described its discussions with national chairmen, presidential candidates and their running mates as “frank, constructive and encouraging.”

The consultations followed the G100’s “Open Letter to the Leaders of the Opposition, Leaders of Thought, Civil Society, and Nigerians of Good Conscience,” issued on August 2, 2026, in which it introduced what it called the “Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition.”

The group said it deliberately kept the consultations away from the media to allow political leaders to engage frankly without the pressure associated with premature public commentary.

“We have deliberately kept these consultations away from the glare of the media, in recognition of the sensitivity of many of the discussions and the need to allow party leaders to engage frankly and constructively without the pressure of premature public commentary,” the statement said.

According to the G100, the talks revealed a shared understanding among the opposition parties of the need for closer cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections.

It said the leaders acknowledged that building a credible opposition would require “sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place the country’s interests above narrow partisan or individual considerations.”

Opposition Parties to Meet August 18

To consolidate the consultations, the G100 announced a Summit of Opposition Parties scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in Abuja.

The group said the summit would provide a structured platform for the participating parties to discuss possible modalities for achieving greater unity ahead of the elections.

The coalition stressed that it would not dictate the outcome of the discussions, but would focus on facilitating dialogue, building confidence and creating an environment for the parties to consider difficult questions around cooperation, accommodation, sacrifice and collective action.

“The G100 does not presume to dictate the outcome of these conversations. Our role is to facilitate dialogue, build confidence and help create the conditions in which the participating political parties can openly consider the difficult questions of cooperation, sacrifice, accommodation and collective action,” it said.

The group added that any framework emerging from the process must respect the legitimate interests of all participating parties while ensuring that the interests of Nigerians remain paramount.

It restated the central argument of its Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition, saying Nigeria’s democracy would be strengthened if voters were presented with a credible and competitive alternative capable of effectively challenging for their mandate.

The G100 also warned that fragmentation among opposition parties could undermine efforts to provide such an alternative.

“The consultations of the past week represent only the beginning. The task ahead will require patience, courage and, above all, sacrifice,” the group said.

It reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating the unity process among Nigeria’s major opposition parties and political leaders in good faith and in what it described as the overriding interest of the country and its democracy.
