Prominent Names Emerge as Presidency Embarks on Vetting Process
The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun the screening exercise for new ambassadorial appointments, marking a crucial step in the administration’s evolving foreign policy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. While the official list remains classified, credible sources within the Presidency have confirmed to BEN Television that the vetting is well underway.
A combination of career diplomats and prominent political figures are said to be under consideration. Individuals reportedly being screened include Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister of Aviation; Femi Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State; Fola Adeola, founder of Guaranty Trust Bank; Reno Omokri, former presidential aide and commentator; Senator Shehu Sani, human rights activist and former senator; as well as former state governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu). Other names are expected including top executives from opposition parties and those not normally sighted publicly to do with political activities but heavily relied on for strategies.
According to insiders, the process is decentralised, with nominees directed to submit their educational and work histories at the nearest Directorate of State Services (DSS) office, where location-based security checks are being conducted.
“They’re going to announce the appointments soon. They are being screened as we speak. The names of the nominees are highly classified for now because not every one of the names listed will eventually make it through,” a senior official revealed.
Another source close to the process added, “FFK is on the list. These are some of the more controversial names that have been put forward. Then there is Fola Adeola and Femi Pedro too. They’re moving on with the process more quickly this time.”
The necessity for thorough vetting was also highlighted. “The nominees are being vetted, and background checks are being carried out. It is usually done to ensure the nominees do not pose any security concerns and that their deployment does not negatively impact the country,” said another official.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, emphasised the need for due diligence.
