Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State, has donated a brand-new 32-seater bus to Confluence Queens FC of Lokoja, in a bid to reposition sports and energise women’s football in the state.
The landmark gesture, designed to boost the mobility, morale, and competitive edge of the state-owned female football team, was delivered on behalf of the Governor by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on Sunday, Fanwo acknowledged the challenges confronting football clubs across the country, assuring that the Kogi State Government is deliberate about addressing the specific needs of Confluence Queens FC.
He emphasised that the present administration, driven by a passion for sports development, is committed to repositioning the sector for excellence and sustainability.
“We’re aware of your challenges, and we’re working to address them. Sometimes, setbacks like relegation are meant to inspire a stronger comeback. You must remain focused and determined because this team belongs at the top,” he said.
He emphasised that the present administration, driven by passion for sports development, is committed to repositioning the sector for excellence and sustainability.
Fanwo further urged the players to remain patient, disciplined, and committed, while assuring them that their welfare concerns—including improved camping facilities and better remuneration—are receiving due attention.
According to him, creating a conducive environment for the players would enable them to focus fully on their careers and deliver improved performances on the pitch.
Highlighting the importance of results, the Commissioner charged the team to reciprocate the government’s support with outstanding performances in upcoming competitions.
“With this new bus, you can proudly compete anywhere in Nigeria. Let your next results reflect your happiness and renewed motivation. When the governor sees improved performance, it’ll encourage even greater support,” he added.
The symbolic presentation of the bus key was made to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Momoh Steven Azeez, who expressed appreciation to the Governor for the timely intervention, noting that the donation would significantly boost the team’s morale and inspire them to excel in national competitions.
Also speaking, the chairman of the club, Abdulmalic Isah, described the donation as long overdue and commended the state government for responding to the team’s needs. He, however, appealed for additional support, particularly in player welfare and funding, noting the financial challenges faced in competing with clubs from other states.
The Team Manager, Oluwatosin Ojo, praised the governor for prioritising the female team, describing the gesture as a strong statement against gender bias in sports development.
She appealed for the construction of a befitting camp for the team and called for similar support for Kogi United, the state’s male football team, which faces comparable challenges.
The donation marks a significant milestone in the Ododo administration’s broader agenda to revitalise sports in Kogi State, with stakeholders expressing optimism that sustained investment will translate into improved performance and greater national recognition for the state’s teams.
