The Prime Minister, speaking in Berlin today after a high-level meeting with President Biden, Chancellor Scholz, and President Macron, addressed two key global issues: the Middle East conflict and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
On the situation in the Middle East, the Prime Minister strongly condemned the actions of Hamas leader Sinwar, whose violence has claimed innocent lives, including those of Israelis and Palestinians. He reaffirmed the UK’s support for Israel’s right to self-defense, particularly in light of Iranian-backed aggression, while emphasizing that a military-only solution is not viable. He called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of hostages, and unimpeded humanitarian access, stressing that the world will no longer tolerate excuses for delays in aid.
The Prime Minister also called for peace in Lebanon and urged the implementation of UN Resolution 1701 to strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces and UNIFIL, restore displaced communities, and support the country’s fragile democracy.
Shifting to the war in Ukraine, the Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and future security. He emphasized that, despite the harsh conditions, Russia’s military is weakening, and the UK, alongside the G7, remains committed to delivering financial and military aid. The Prime Minister confirmed that 95% of the military equipment promised in July has been delivered, and further efforts are underway to provide $50 billion in support through frozen Russian assets.
The Prime Minister concluded by assuring Ukraine of the UK’s steadfast backing, pledging to stand by Ukraine for as long as necessary to secure a just peace.
