Event at Africa Centre
London’s Africa Centre has launched a national campaign aimed at securing the long-term future of one of Britain’s most influential African cultural institutions, marking what many see as a defining moment in its more than six decades of service to African and diaspora communities across the United Kingdom.
Announced on 1 August 2026, the campaign, titled “Our Africa Centre. Our Heritage. Our Future.”, calls on communities, philanthropists, corporate partners and friends of Africa to help build a financially sustainable future for the organisation following an extensive review of its financial position. According to the Board of Trustees, a transformation of the charity’s operating model has become essential to preserve its mission for future generations.
Founded in 1964, The Africa Centre has long served as a cultural meeting point where African heritage, literature, music, business, diplomacy and community engagement intersect. For generations of Africans, Caribbeans and friends of Africa living in Britain, the Centre has been far more than a building. It has provided a platform for dialogue, identity, creativity and international understanding.
The Trustees say the organisation is now entering what they describe as “Africa Centre 3.0″—a new phase focused on financial resilience, strategic partnerships and exploring sustainable options for its Southwark property while preserving its cultural mission. Public support, philanthropy and long-term partnerships form the centrepiece of the campaign.
In a statement accompanying the launch, the Trustees emphasised that the institution’s greatest strength has always been its people rather than its physical location, stating that “The Africa Centre has never been defined by bricks and mortar. It has always been defined by the people it inspires, the communities it brings together and the future it helps create.”
Across the world, many cultural institutions representing ethnic and regional communities have faced similar challenges. Jewish cultural centres, Asian arts organisations, Irish cultural institutes and Caribbean heritage organisations have increasingly diversified their funding through philanthropy, corporate partnerships, endowments and commercial activities to ensure their long-term survival. The Africa Centre’s latest campaign reflects a similar international trend in which heritage organisations are adapting to changing economic realities while protecting their cultural purpose.
For Britain’s African diaspora, whose influence has grown significantly in business, education, politics, technology, healthcare and the creative industries, institutions such as The Africa Centre continue to provide an important space for cultural exchange, leadership development and engagement with wider British society.
The campaign also raises broader questions about how cultural institutions can remain financially sustainable without losing the identity and community values upon which they were founded. As African communities continue to grow and diversify across the UK, the success of initiatives such as this may influence how future generations preserve and celebrate African heritage.
Founded more than sixty years ago, The Africa Centre remains one of Britain’s most recognised African cultural institutions. Its new campaign represents not simply an appeal for financial support, but an invitation to shape the next chapter of African cultural life in the United Kingdom.
