The ancient city of Ile-Ife witnessed history come alive on Saturday, May 2, 2026, as the revered Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi formally installed Chief (Mrs.) Olufunsho Amosun as the Yeye Moremi Oodua, a title steeped in legend, sacrifice, and feminine strength across Yorubaland. Significantly, the day also marked her 60th birthday, transforming the occasion into a remarkable double celebration of personal milestone and cultural elevation.
From the early hours of the morning, the palace grounds – transformed into a breathtaking spectacle—welcomed guests into what could only be described as a cultural carnival. Beginning around 10am, singers and performing artistes set the tone for a day that blurred the lines between tradition and theatrical excellence. The newly redesigned palace space, adorned with elaborate stages, canopies, and seating arenas, created a festival atmosphere reminiscent of the globally celebrated Notting Hill Carnival.
In a procession that will linger long in memory, horses and richly decorated chariots added regal splendour to the occasion. The newly installed Yeye Moremi Oodua rode in a chariot alongside one of the Oloris, greeted by thunderous cheers, chants, and songs from crowds who lined the streets. For many observers, this was unprecedented; an event of such scale and artistic depth that Ile-Ife has never seen before.
At the heart of the ceremony stood the symbolism of the title itself. The Ooni described the Yeye Moremi stool as one of the most sacred in Yorubaland, reserved for women who reflect the courage and selflessness of the legendary Queen Moremi Ajasoro. In conferring the title, the monarch affirmed Chief Olufunsho Amosun’s alignment with these timeless virtues – making her birthday not just a celebration of age, but of purpose, legacy, and cultural responsibility.

The roll call of dignitaries underscored the national importance of the event. Representation came from across political and traditional institutions, including the presence of Olusegun Obasanjo (represented by his wife), and Seyi Makinde, alongside senators (Senator Lanre Tejuoso), Former Ministers (Hon Lekan Adegbite, Hon Samaila); Ambassador Sarafa Ishola, Amb. Fatima, Emirs, Captains of industries, governors’ spouses, royal fathers, DGs, Hon Abike Dabiri and distinguished guests from across Nigeria and beyond.
Following the formal rites of installation, the celebration flowed seamlessly into a grand continuation at a second venue. The ever-energetic Ooni, supported by his tireless team, ensured the transition was smooth, maintaining the tempo of what had already become a historic day – now amplified by the joy of a 60th birthday celebration woven into the festivities.
Guests were treated to an array of Nigerian cuisine; an edible showcase of the nation’s richness and diversity. From traditional delicacies to the globally celebrated Jollof rice, the menu reflected Nigeria’s culinary diplomacy at its finest.
Music legends, including King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey, took to the stage, delivering performances that captivated the thousands in attendance. Their presence added generational depth to the celebration, bridging past and present through sound.

Behind the scenes, creativity reached astonishing heights. Event production companies orchestrated a complete transformation of venues – turning ordinary open spaces and halls into immersive, almost magical environments. Attendees expressed amazement at the scale and ingenuity, reinforcing a powerful narrative: Nigerians can create world-class experiences when vision meets execution.
In moments of solemnity and spiritual reflection, prayers were offered for the family of the Yeye Moremi Oodua. The Ooni himself led songs of praise, creating a deeply emotional connection between tradition, faith, and community. The presence of children and young attendees added a layer of inspiration, as the next generation witnessed culture not just preserved—but elevated.
In his characteristic warmth and hospitality, Ibikunle Amosun ensured that guests felt personally welcomed, greeting many and overseeing arrangements with visible gratitude and pride.
The celebration stretched into the evening, leaving behind echoes of music, colour, and cultural pride. The First Lady of Nigeria also marked the occasion with a symbolic presentation of gifts, further highlighting the national significance of the moment.
What unfolded in Ile-Ife was more than a coronation; it was a statement. A statement of heritage, of identity, and of Nigeria’s boundless capacity for cultural excellence. The convergence of a historic installation with a 60th birthday milestone elevated the occasion into a rare, deeply symbolic double celebration; honouring both legacy and longevity.
Indeed, Ile-Ife and Nigeria have much to be proud of. This was not merely an event; it was history, reimagined and relived in grand style.
