DIASPORA umbrella body, the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK (Canuk), has voted to suspend its vice chair passports Olajumoke Ariyo for four weeks for bringing the organisation into disrepute.
Ms Ariyo, whose office is responsible for all passport-related matters, chairs Canuk’s passport liaison committee. She was found guilty of misconduct after it emerged that she drafted a Canuk passport report, which was sent to the minister of internal affairs without the approval of the executive committee.
At an emergency meeting held last night, a majority of executive committee members voted to suspend her for four weeks. Ms. Ariyo has also been asked to write a letter of apology to the Canuk membership, apologising for her actions and promising that they will never be repeated.
In addition, Ms Ariyo was also reprimanded for constantly taking a different position from the rest of the executive committee in public and openly criticising her colleagues. A code of conduct drafted by the Canuk legal adviser was also agreed at the meeting, which all executive members will be bound by going forward.
