The Abia State Police Command has arrested two young men for alleged conspiracy, attempted child stealing, assault, and possession of substances suspected to be hard drugs in Olokoro, Umuahia South Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as 24-year-old Nzubechi Chinagorom and 25-year-old Chinonso Chibundu, both residents of Olokoro, were apprehended following intelligence-led operations conducted by officers of the Command in collaboration with the Olokoro Community Vigilante.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the incident occurred on May 25, 2026, when Nzubechi allegedly entered the residence of Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, 32, and attempted to forcibly take away her two-week-old baby girl.
The police said the attempt resulted in a violent struggle between the suspect and the child’s mother. During the altercation, Nzubechi allegedly assaulted and stabbed the woman with a kitchen knife. The baby reportedly fell and hit her head in the process.
Investigations revealed that the second suspect, Chinonso Chibundu, remained outside the residence, allegedly acting as a lookout while the crime was being carried out.
Following the victim’s distress call, both suspects fled the scene but were later tracked and arrested at a nearby bus stop. The police disclosed that the suspects were found consuming substances suspected to be hard drugs at the time of their arrest.
The injured mother and her baby were immediately rushed to a hospital for medical attention and have since recovered.
Police authorities confirmed that relevant exhibits were recovered and that investigations were concluded at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on June 2, 2026.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the Abia State Police Command urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely information on suspicious activities.
The Command encouraged members of the public to report security concerns through the nearest police station or its emergency hotlines: 08035415405, 08079210004, 08079210005, and 08079210006.
