As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate International Workers’ Day, the Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) has urged both government and private sector employers to prioritise fair wages and improved welfare for workers.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the President of AANI, Ambassador Emmanuel Okafor, stressed the need for policies that guarantee equitable remuneration and better working conditions across all sectors of the economy.
Okafor described Nigerian workers as the backbone of national development, noting that their contributions to key sectors deserve commensurate rewards. He expressed concern over the rising cost of living, which he said continues to erode workers’ purchasing power and overall wellbeing.
According to him, fair wages go beyond social justice, serving as a critical driver of productivity, economic growth, and national stability.
“A well-motivated workforce is essential for sustainable development. When workers are fairly compensated, their morale improves, productivity increases, and the overall economy benefits,” he said.
The AANI president also called for sustained dialogue among labour unions, government, and employers to build consensus and implement durable solutions to labour-related challenges.
He encouraged Nigerian workers to remain resilient and committed to their duties despite prevailing economic pressures, while reaffirming AANI’s support for policies that promote good governance, economic inclusion, and improved welfare for all citizens.
