The newly appointed Hon. Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development in Abia State, Hon. Sir. Nwaobilor Ananaba, has reiterated the commitment of the State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti towards grassroots sports development.
Sir. Nwaobilor Ananaba stated this when he paid an unscheduled visit to Umuahia Township Stadium which is the home ground to two of Abia State most cherished and followed football clubs, Abia Warriors and Abia Comets football clubs.
The Honourable Commissioner, while noting that the two clubs have at various levels in the past struggled to put Abia on the national map of professional football under challenging sporting conditions, said he is on a mission to bring dynamic change and improvement to the sporting facilities, the recognition and appreciation of sports men/women in the State.
The Hon. Commissioner’s visit was for an on-the-spot assessment of the facilities, at the Township Stadium which also houses the office of Abia State Sports Council.
According to him “To his utmost dismay, I witnessed a decay that is towering, daunting and unprecedented , that the previous administration left such momentous facility to rot away like it’s now is heartbreaking, but I want to assure you all, that we will not allow the continuing rot of a great sporting facility that has the potential of contributing greatly to the development of Abia State’s, sports industry, Economy and social growth”.
“This government of His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti remains resolute in the mission to return Abia state to its pride of place. The task of rebuilding the State is indeed a huge one, but very much possible and together we can make it happen”. “A Abia is possible”.
Also, the Hon. Commissioner was on ground to receive Abia State Badminton Paralympian’s who had just returned from Uganda, where they competed in the Badminton tournament.
Sir. Nwaobilor who commended the team when they came visiting at the Government House, Umuahia, said he was highly elated to learn that the team won 4 Gold medals, 1 Silver, and 4 Bronze medals for the state at the tournament.
