The Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti OFR, recently paid a visit to the deserted Enyimba Hotels in Aba. This once proud establishment was meant to be a source of pride for the city, drawing visitors from all over the world and contributing significantly to the state’s tourism industry revenue.
Noteworthy is the fact that Enyimba International Hotel’s conception and construction began during the late Chief Sam Mbakwe’s administration in 1979, under the former Government of Imo State. The primary objective back then was to establish a global hospitality brand for Imo State, centered around its two major cities, Owerri and Aba. Concorde Hotel was intended for Owerri, the capital city, while Enyimba Hotel was meant for Aba, the commercial city. However, for reasons known only to subsequent governors, the Owerri Landmark hotel came into existence and became the flagship hospitality spot of the new Imo state.
Unfortunately, the dream of a fitting Landmark Hotel and Hospitality spot for Aba and Abia state has remained elusive for over four decades. The building site on Asa-Waterside has been a breeding ground for corruption rather than being utilized for the development of a model waterfront hotel and resorts.
Nevertheless, Alex Otti visited the abandoned hotel and pledged to rebuild and revitalize the Enyimba Hotels, which were once the pride of the city. This move instills great confidence that a new Abia state is possible, fostering a conducive and sustainable environment for socio-economic growth. With the refurbishment of major intercity roads in Aba, facilitating mobility, and the revitalization of critical state hospitality, recreational, and leisure facilities, Aba can regain its reputation and glory as the next premier destination for both local and international tourism in the East of the Niger.
