The Prime Minister has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening European security and deepening cooperation with the European Union following high-level talks in Munich with the President of the European Commission, .
According to a Downing Street spokesperson, the meeting focused on bolstering collective defence and reinforcing transatlantic unity at a time of increasing security threats across Europe.
“The Prime Minister met the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Munich today,” the spokesperson confirmed.
“Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue work that will bolster our collective defences in the face of growing threats to European security.”
The discussions underscored a shared view that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security architecture. Both leaders agreed that Europe should work towards becoming “a more European NATO,” while maintaining strong transatlantic ties with allies, particularly the United States.
The Prime Minister used the meeting to outline what Downing Street described as a “high ambition” for the future UK–EU partnership. He expressed a desire for closer integration across key sectors including the economy, defence and technology.
“He set out his desire for further integration across the economy, defence and technology — in the interests of greater security, stronger growth and higher living standards for the British people,” the spokesperson said.
Emphasising the strategic importance of the relationship, the Prime Minister added:
“There is no question where the national interest lies and I will always fight for what’s best for the United Kingdom.”
Looking ahead, both sides committed to intensifying preparations for the next UK–EU summit. They also agreed to accelerate ongoing negotiations in areas that could deliver tangible benefits to citizens and businesses.
Among the priorities discussed were:
- A potential food and drink agreement aimed at lowering prices.
- An emissions trading scheme that could help reduce household energy bills.
- A youth experience scheme designed to expand opportunities for young people to work and travel abroad.
The meeting signals a pragmatic phase in UK–EU relations, focusing on economic cooperation, security coordination and practical measures that address cost-of-living concerns while strengthening Europe’s collective resilience.
