The United Kingdom and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening one of Africa’s most enduring bilateral relationships following a meeting in London between the UK’s incoming High Commissioner to Nigeria, Peter Vowles, and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu.

The meeting, held as Mr Vowles prepares to assume office in Abuja in September, focused on advancing cooperation across diplomacy, trade, defence, investment, consular services and people-to-people engagement.

Expressing his enthusiasm ahead of his new posting, Mr Vowles described Nigeria as a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom. He highlighted the significant contribution Nigerians continue to make to British society, the economy and national life, while reaffirming the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development and prosperity.

“I’m super excited about the job and the connections between our two countries,” he said, adding that the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the shared priorities that will shape the next phase of UK–Nigeria relations.

Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu described the meeting as both customary and strategically important. He noted that Nigeria and the United Kingdom have enjoyed excellent relations spanning diplomacy, defence, economic cooperation and consular affairs for decades. According to him, both sides reviewed these areas with the objective of building on existing achievements and agreed to work together to move the relationship forward as quickly as possible.

Peter Vowles is an experienced British diplomat who has served in senior diplomatic and development positions, including as the UK’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe. His appointment reflects London’s continued commitment to deepening engagement with Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest economies and the UK’s most significant strategic partner in West Africa.

Ambassador Amin Dalhatu has continued to champion Nigeria’s interests in the United Kingdom by promoting stronger diplomatic, commercial and cultural ties while supporting the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.

As both envoys prepare for a new chapter in bilateral cooperation, expectations are high that their partnership will deliver tangible outcomes in trade, investment, education, security, technology, healthcare, climate action and youth development.
