The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming it revised the campaign timetable for the 2027 general elections, describing the information as false.

A viral graphic had claimed the commission issued a new campaign schedule in line with the Electoral Act, indicating that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections would end on January 15, 2027, instead of January 14, as contained in INEC’s official timetable.

The graphic also claimed that campaigns for the governorship and state House of Assembly elections would close on February 5, 2027, rather than February 4.

While the dates for the presidential and National Assembly elections (January 16, 2027) and the governorship and state Assembly elections (February 6, 2027) remained unchanged in the viral post, the campaign end dates differed from those officially announced by the commission.

Reacting to the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, said the commission had not issued any separate campaign timetable.

He described the circulating graphic as fake and urged the public to rely only on information released through INEC’s official communication channels.

“This graphic did not emanate from INEC. The commission does not issue campaign timetables separately. All official campaign timelines are already contained in the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election released on February 26, 2026,” Oketola said.

He also warned against the spread of misinformation as preparations for the elections gather momentum.

“We advise the media and the public to always verify electoral information through our official channels. As we enter the election season, we must all remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation and disinformation,” he added.

INEC had, on February 26, 2026, released the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.

Under the timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on January 16, 2027, while governorship and state House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

The commission also fixed February 13, 2026, for the issuance of the notice of election.

Campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for governorship and state Assembly elections will commence on September 9, 2026.

According to the official timetable, campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will end on January 14, 2027, while those for the governorship and state House of Assembly elections will close on February 4, 2027, exactly 24 hours before the respective polls.
