Former National Executive Babachir David Lawal, in a significant and heartfelt tribute, has commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for the groundbreaking decision to create and restore five new Chiefdoms and two Emirates in the state.
Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), is a respected leader and advocate for equity and justice in Adamawa State. Over the years, he has been vocal about the socio-political challenges facing the indigenous peoples of the state. Lawal’s voice carries significant weight, making his endorsement of Governor Fintiri’s action a pivotal moment in Adamawa’s history.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri was first elected as the Executive Governor of Adamawa State in May 2019 and re-elected in 2023. Known for his progressive policies and efforts to foster inclusivity, Fintiri prioritised restoring harmony among the diverse ethnic and cultural groups in the state. His administration has focused on bridging divides, ensuring development, and promoting fairness in governance.
The creation and restoration of these Chiefdoms and Emirates mark a critical milestone in Adamawa’s history. During the pre-colonial and colonial eras, many indigenous communities faced systematic challenges, including the abolishment of key Chiefdoms. One notable example is the Hoba Chiefdom, which was stripped of its status despite its rich cultural legacy and expansive territory.
Governor Fintiri’s decision to reverse these historical issues not only honours the well known heritage of the state but also reinstates the pride and identity of its people.
Lawal lauded the governor’s boldness and commitment to equity, describing the announcement as a long-awaited remedy to historical wrongs. “The clamor for these Chiefdoms and Emirates has been ongoing since pre-colonial times. This courageous act by Governor Fintiri has brought immense joy and celebration to the people of Adamawa State,” Lawal remarked.
In his statement, Lawal also drew inspiration from Isaiah 61:1, which speaks of bringing good news to the oppressed and comforting the brokenhearted. He likened the governor’s move to a prophetic fulfillment, bringing hope and restoration to the aboriginal communities.
Lawal concluded his tribute by expressing heartfelt wishes to the people of Adamawa for a joyous Christmas and New Year celebration, emphasizing that this year’s festivities would be unparalleled in the state’s history. He described the governor’s initiative as a transformative step that would resonate through generations, cementing Governor Fintiri’s legacy as a leader who championed justice and inclusivity.
