Abuja, Nigeria – January 23, 2025
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, today presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of the state-of-the-art Defence Complex in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing its military infrastructure and supporting the armed forces.
The event, held in the nation’s capital, signified more than just the commencement of a construction project; it embodied the government’s renewed dedication to safeguarding the nation and empowering the men and women who selflessly serve.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Tinubu lauded the unwavering courage and resilience of the armed forces under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa, OFR, alongside the service chiefs. He praised their vigilance and sacrifices in countering threats to Nigeria’s peace and stability, calling them “a shining beacon of hope and strength for all citizens.”
The President highlighted the inadequacy of the current Defence and Services Headquarters, which has served as a temporary base for over three decades. The new Defence Complex is designed to be a modern and comprehensive facility, reflecting the critical role of the armed forces as the backbone of Nigeria’s national security.
“This complex will stand not only as a centre of loyalty but also as a national monument that every Nigerian will be proud of,” President Tinubu stated. “It will re-energize our leaders and fortify our nation’s defence architecture, ensuring a secure future for our democracy and people.”
In line with the administration’s commitment to a professional and well-equipped military, President Tinubu announced enhanced measures to improve the operational effectiveness of the armed forces, including the procurement of critical equipment and the development of a military-industrial complex.
The President took pride in showcasing Tactical Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), locally assembled in Nigeria. He praised the advancements spearheaded by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, the Command Engineering Depot, and private firms like EPAIL and ProForce, noting that these efforts bolster both the military’s capacity and the economy.
“This project is not just bricks and mortar; it represents a legacy of strength, determination, and unity,” President Tinubu said. “It is a marker of hope for our service members, their families, and the future of our security.”
As the first phase of the Defence Complex begins construction, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing it within the current government’s tenure. He urged Nigerians to rally behind the armed forces and contribute to the success of this transformative initiative.
The ceremony follows the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations, underscoring the nation’s enduring respect for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for Nigeria’s peace and security.
At the same event, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa thanked the President for supporting the vision of empowering the Armed Forces.
