He congratulated Professor Amupitan on his appointment, noting that the position comes with enormous expectations from Nigerians who yearn for transparent, credible and legally compliant electoral processes.
The Committee Chairman emphasised the need for INEC to further strengthen its operations by deepening the deployment of technology in the conduct of elections, while ensuring that robust safeguards are in place to make the entire process acceptable, transparent and trustworthy.
Senator Lalong assured that the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters will diligently carry out its constitutional oversight responsibilities. He added that the Committee will also work towards making appropriate budgetary provisions to enable INEC acquire, deploy and effectively utilise the technology required to deliver clean and credible elections.
In his response, the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, expressed appreciation to the Committee for the engagement, describing it as a valuable opportunity to formally outline the vision and priorities of the new leadership of the Commission.
Professor Amupitan assured that under his leadership, INEC will deepen the use of technology in the electoral process, while also ensuring that personnel responsible for operating such systems are adequately trained, empowered and held accountable for their actions and inactions during elections.
He appealed to the Committee for generous and timely budgetary support to enable the Commission implement its programmes effectively and within the required timelines.
