The Nigerian Peace Corps Establishment Bill, initially passed by the House of Representatives on February 29, 2024, and forwarded to the Senate for concurrence, underwent its first reading during the Senate session.
In forthcoming proceedings, the Senate will deliberate on a motion for concurrence, spearheaded by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), the Leader of the Senate. This motion aims to align the Bill with existing laws of the National Assembly.
It’s noteworthy that although the bill was previously passed during the 8th Assembly, it failed to secure presidential assent.
The Peace Corps of Nigeria established over 25 years ago by the National Commandant, Dr Dickson Akoh.
It is incorporated in Nigeria under the Company and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) and accorded the Federal Government recognition through the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and granted license to operate in the Country as a non-governmental organisation by the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning.
Additionally, alongside the Peace Corps bill, the Nigerian Hunters and Security Service Bill 2024, the Legislative Houses (Powers & Privileges) Act (Amendment) Bill 2024, and the National Talent Rehabilitation and Integration Agency (Establishment) Bill 2024 underwent their first readings in the Senate.
Further bills that underwent their first readings include the Agricultural Research Council Act (Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Agricultural Harvest and Processing Zone (Establishment) Bill 2024.
