Russian Warship Holds Live-Fire Drill Near UK as PM Burnham Reaffirms Support for Ukraine

A Russian naval vessel carried out a live-fire exercise in international waters off the southwest coast of the United Kingdom on Monday, prompting close monitoring by the Royal Navy as Prime Minister Andy Burnham began his first day in office.

The vessel, identified by British media as the Neustrashimy, conducted the drill about 40 nautical miles off Plymouth, according to the UK’s Ministry of Defence.

A ministry spokesperson said the Royal Navy tracked the exercise throughout and continues to monitor the ship’s movements, stressing that Britain’s armed forces remain prepared to protect the country’s national security.

The exercise comes amid a noticeable increase in Russian naval activity near British waters in recent months. In July, UK authorities intercepted a Russian “shadow fleet” tanker in the English Channel for the first time as part of efforts to monitor vessels linked to Moscow.

The timing of Monday’s exercise also coincided with Burnham’s first day as prime minister. Shortly after taking office, he spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reaffirming Britain’s continued military and political backing for Kyiv.

According to Downing Street, Burnham assured Zelensky there would be “absolutely no change” in the UK’s approach to supporting Ukraine and maintaining pressure on Russia.

Responding to questions about whether the naval exercise was linked to Burnham’s appointment, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed suggestions of a direct connection. However, he said Moscow had taken note of the new prime minister’s pledge of unwavering support for Ukraine, describing it as evidence that Britain intends to continue backing Kyiv in the conflict.

Peskov added that Russia would factor Britain’s position into its future decisions.

Military analysts said the exercise appeared intended to demonstrate Russia’s naval capabilities. Former British Army chief General Richard Dannatt said the timing was unlikely to be accidental, describing it as a signal from the Kremlin that Russia remains prepared to project military power close to the UK.

British officials said the Russian warship notified HMS Tyne, a Royal Navy patrol vessel shadowing it, before commencing the exercise. The British ship subsequently repositioned to maintain a safe distance while monitoring the operation, which reportedly lasted around 30 minutes. Officials have not disclosed the type of weapons used during the drill.

Russia’s Defence Ministry had not commented on the exercise at the time of publication.

The latest incident follows a series of encounters involving Russian vessels near UK waters. Last month, a Russian warship fired warning shots close to a yacht in the English Channel, drawing criticism from then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who described the incident as “deeply concerning.” British defence officials later said the warning shots were not directed at the yacht but were intended to prevent a possible collision.

The Royal Navy has maintained heightened surveillance of Russian naval movements in recent months, saying it remains committed to protecting British waters and reassuring NATO allies amid continued tensions with Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
