In a proactive move to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic foundations, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, has signaled a fresh commitment to openness and public trust.
During a high-level meeting with the INEC Press Corps in Abuja on Wednesday, the Chairman outlined a vision for a more inclusive electoral body, emphasizing that a robust partnership with the media is the key to bridging the public confidence gap and ensuring every Nigerian voice is heard.
Professor Amupitan, who took the helm in late 2025, praised the vital role of journalists in the democratic process. He framed the commission’s current mission not just as a logistical one, but as a journey toward unprecedented transparency.
”Our goal is to ensure the transparency of our processes is felt by every citizen. By partnering with the media, we can transform the national narrative and build a commission that truly belongs to the people.” — Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN
The Chairman of the Press Corps, Segun Ojumu, expressed strong support for this new direction, noting the “transparent manner” in which the new leadership has operated since its inception.
Under the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, INEC is moving forward with a clear and structured timeline, providing certainty for voters and political stakeholders alike.
Before the nationwide polls, INEC will showcase its upgraded processes in two key off-cycle elections. These polls serve as a vital opportunity for the commission to demonstrate its readiness and commitment to excellence
