There is growing backlash following remarks by former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkiru Onyejeocha, who allegedly described a sitting Chairman of Umunneochi Local Government Area as a “lunatic” for criticising her style of constituency empowerment.
The controversy stems from recent comments questioning her approach to empowerment during her years in the National Assembly, particularly the sharing of one tricycle among three beneficiaries—an initiative critics argue lacks real economic value.
Reacting to the development, the Agun’echeibe Youth Movement condemned the statement, describing it as “reckless, disrespectful, and an insult to democratic leadership at the grassroots.”
“It is unacceptable for a former public office holder to resort to name-calling simply because her policies are being scrutinised,” the group said in a statement on Saturday. “Leaders must be open to criticism and engage constructively, not demean those elected by the people.”
The group further used the opportunity to reaffirm its support for Amobi Godwin Ogah, noting that his leadership style reflects “maturity, accountability, and genuine commitment to impactful empowerment.”
“While others trade insults, Hon. Ogah continues to focus on delivering results that directly improve the lives of constituents,” the statement added.
The incident has sparked wider debate across Umunneochi and beyond, with calls for civility in public discourse and a renewed focus on meaningful, people-oriented development initiatives.
