In a landmark moment for Nigerian cinema, the epic Hausa-language film Mai Martaba, directed and produced by Prince Daniel, has been selected as Nigeria’s official submission for the International Feature Film (IFF) category at the 97th Academy Awards. This powerful story, set in an ancient African kingdom, captures themes of power, love, betrayal, and the revolutionary strength of female leadership.
Chosen by the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC), Mai Martaba represents Nigeria’s continued rise on the global film stage, showcasing its rich storytelling, cultural heritage, and commitment to diverse voices. The NOSC praised the film for its dynamic visual appeal and impactful narrative on inclusive leadership, making it a compelling choice to compete for the world’s most prestigious film accolade.
The NOSC, chaired by acclaimed actress Stephanie Linus, comprises a 15-member voting body of celebrated figures in Nigerian cinema, including Directors’ Guild of Nigeria President Dr. Victor Okhai, star actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, veteran director Andy Amenechi, and filmmakers such as Izu Ojukwu and Emem Isong. Together, they unanimously recognized Mai Martaba’s relevance and the cinematic experience it brings to audiences both locally and internationally.
Shot on location in Daura, Katsina State, Mai Martaba delves into the historical trade boom of an African kingdom through the Trans-Saharan exchange—a prosperous era threatened by an intense power struggle within the Agadashawa ruling dynasty. With sweeping visuals and a resonant story, the film has already captivated audiences in Nigerian theaters and earned a nomination at the prestigious Septimius Awards in Amsterdam.
Reflecting on this achievement, Prince Daniel expressed his gratitude and excitement:
“I am more than glad to be a part of this history.” The film’s journey continues as it heads toward a critical review by the IFF Executive Committee to determine its progression to the next stage of the competition.
The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2, 2025, at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, and will be broadcast live to over 200 territories, amplifying Nigeria’s cinematic voice on the world stage. With Mai Martaba, Nigeria’s film industry takes yet another step forward, establishing its position as a vibrant and influential force in global cinema. Part of the production team included acclaimed producer Egor Kelly.
