Former Ogun State governor and senator, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has moved decisively to clarify the controversy surrounding the recent Ogun Central senatorial stakeholders’ meeting, describing widespread reports as “complete misrepresentation” of what transpired.
In an official statement titled “Setting the Record Straight,” the senator addressed the narratives emerging from the meeting held on April 23, 2026, at the residence of Chief Olusegun Osoba, emphasising that the public accounts do not accurately reflect the proceedings.
According to the statement, the meeting itself was convened at his instance, following growing insinuations regarding his potential candidacy for the 2027 senatorial election under the All Progressives Congress.
Providing clarity on one of the most contentious issues, Senator Amosun explained that his remarks regarding fellow aspirants had been misconstrued. He stated that three aspirants had previously approached him individually to seek his support and had, on their own accord, indicated willingness to step down should he decide to contest.
Crucially, he made it clear that:
“Nowhere throughout the meeting did I request anyone to withdraw from the race for me because that would be undemocratic and unacceptable.”
The former governor further used the opportunity to reaffirm his democratic credentials, pointing to his electoral track record:
“I am not only a democrat, I have contested and won election twice to the office of Governor of Ogun State and twice as a Senator of the Federal Republic.”
On the broader issue of the party process, his position was equally firm and principled:
“What I said at the meeting, which I reiterate, is that I would not be part of a primary election whose result is predetermined.”
Observers note that this stance reinforces a long-standing narrative around Senator Amosun’s advocacy for fairness, internal democracy, and credible electoral processes within the party.
The statement also contained a direct appeal to the media, urging greater responsibility in political reporting:
“I advise the media to report proceedings of meetings correctly by cross-checking accounts given by interested parties.”
Beyond the clarification, insiders and political watchers maintain that the developments reflect the normal dynamics of a competitive pre-primary environment. As one observer noted:
“At this stage, all aspirants remain in contention. Strategy and tact are critical, and much of what is happening is political posturing.”
Despite the recent controversy, Senator Amosun’s standing within Ogun Central remains formidable. With a strong grassroots base, established political structure, and a history of electoral success, he continues to be widely regarded as a leading contender.
Supporters argue that his experience and reach make him a strategic asset for the party, particularly at a time when opposition forces are increasingly exploring collaboration ahead of 2027.
His past positions on equity within party arrangements, alongside his alignment with during the 2023 presidential election, are also cited as indicators of both principle and loyalty.

As consultations continue among key stakeholders, including APC highest ranking leaders and other party leaders, there is a growing emphasis on unity, credibility, and the emergence of a candidate capable of securing victory for the party.
For many, Senator Amosun’s response marks a turning point, shifting the conversation from speculation to clarity, and from tension to a more constructive political engagement.
In the final analysis, while political contests often generate moments of friction, they also reveal leadership. In this instance, Senator Amosun has not only addressed the issues directly but has also reaffirmed his commitment to democratic principles and his enduring relevance in Ogun Central politics.
