As Team Nigeria continues to make its mark at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a significant enhancement of athletes’ bonuses and welfare packages, underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to rewarding excellence and motivating competitors to achieve even greater success.

Announcing the revised incentive package, NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, said the decision followed consultations with the Director General and reflected the Commission’s determination to provide stronger support for Team Nigeria throughout the Games.

“During a brief meeting with the Director General, we agreed to increase the athletes’ bonuses,” Dikko said.

Under the new reward structure, gold medal winners will now receive a total of $10,000, comprising $5,000 as an instant cash reward and $5,000 paid directly into their accounts. Silver medallists will receive $5,000 ($2,000 instant cash and $3,000 paid into their accounts), while bronze medallists will receive $3,000 ($1,000 instant cash and $2,000 paid into their accounts).

Dikko explained that the original package for gold medallists stood at $8,000 but was increased after he met members of Team Nigeria in Aberdeen.

“After meeting the team in Aberdeen, I decided to increase the instant cash reward to $5,000 as added motivation for all gold medal hopefuls,” he said.

He confirmed that all gold medallists had already received the revised $10,000 reward, while silver medallists had also been paid their instant cash incentives. Coaches have not been left out of the reward system, with $5,000 earmarked for the coach of every gold medallist. Athletes are also receiving $200 daily allowances, while coaches receive $250 per day during the Games.

The NSC Chairman further revealed that the Commission has retained the flexibility to introduce special incentives where exceptional circumstances warrant additional motivation. He cited the on-the-spot cash reward presented to Rilwan Idris, which inspired the athlete to improve from a potential bronze-medal finish to winning gold.

The enhanced welfare package reflects a renewed commitment by the NSC to athlete welfare, recognising that adequate support, timely rewards and improved morale contribute significantly to elite sporting performance.

Beyond the medals, the Commonwealth Games provide Nigeria with an invaluable platform to showcase its sporting talent, strengthen international rankings, promote national unity and inspire a new generation of athletes. Strong performances also attract greater investment in sports development, coaching and grassroots programmes across the country.

Although Nigeria was not represented in netball at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, encouraging progress is being made in the sport. The newly assembled Nigeria Hawks recently gained valuable international exposure by playing warm-up matches against Commonwealth nations including Scotland and Jamaica, while recording an impressive victory over Pakistan. Though these fixtures were not part of the Commonwealth Games competition, they represent an important milestone in Nigeria’s long-term netball development and provide a solid foundation for future participation in major international events.

With enhanced incentives, improved welfare and growing investment across both established and emerging sports, Team Nigeria is not only pursuing medals in Glasgow but also laying the groundwork for sustained sporting success and greater international recognition in the years ahead.
