The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), under the leadership of Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi has unveiled a pivotal new initiative to enhance Nigeria’s trade and investment landscape. The Bashir Adeniyi Centre for International Trade and Investment was recently inaugurated at the NIIA’s Lagos facility, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s bid to strengthen its role in the global trade environment.
Since taking office, CGC Adeniyi has been instrumental in advancing initiatives that underscore Nigeria’s strategic position in international trade. The new Centre, named in his honor, reflects his commitment to promoting robust, sustainable economic growth and trade facilitation. “The establishment of this Centre comes at an opportune time as Nigeria is repositioning itself in the global trade environment,” Adeniyi remarked during the inauguration ceremony. “As we advance these initiatives, I envision this Centre becoming a comprehensive national think tank dedicated to international trade and investment.”
Professor Eghosa Osaghae, Director-General of the NIIA, emphasized the Centre’s role as a specialized training ground for senior customs officials. “Today, we proudly announce the establishment of the Bashir Adeniyi Centre for International Trade and Investment. This facility will serve as a finishing school for senior Customs officers, offering executive-level certification courses. With NIIA’s reputation as a globally recognized institute, we are poised to immerse the Nigeria Customs Service within the framework of the World Customs Organisation,” Professor Osaghae shared in his address.
The event included an engaging panel discussion with prominent figures like Donald Duke and Dr. Chinyere Almona, who provided insights into the challenges and opportunities in Nigeria’s trade and investment sector.
Highlighting the Centre’s strategic importance, CGC Adeniyi told reporters, “Our mandate extends beyond enforcement—it includes a strong commitment to trade facilitation. We anticipate that the Bashir Adeniyi Centre will serve as a centre of excellence, enhancing capacity and awareness around the essential role of international trade. Trade is a pathway to prosperity, and we hope that this Centre will foster that prosperity through focused and informed trade practices.”
Following the inauguration, CGC Adeniyi officially unveiled the Centre and led a tour of the facility, further solidifying Nigeria’s commitment to building a strong, trade-focused economy and international reputation.
Other guests at the event included Barr. Prince Adewole Abebayo, a leading international legal icon, Ms Yewande of Diamond Bustline, Representatives of NIDMECORP among others.
