Nigeria bids farewell to one of its earliest post-independence healthcare trailblazers, Chief (Dr) Christopher Olufemi Aluko JP, who passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, at the age of 88.
In a statement released by his eldest son, Mr Olushina Aluko, the distinguished nurse, health manager, and community leader, Chief Aluko—fondly known as Ogo Olu—was among the first generation of Nigerian nurses in the 1960s. His career began at Ilesa General Hospital, where he helped establish clinical excellence and mentored countless professionals. His influence extended to General Hospital Ikare and District Hospital Iyin Ekiti, where he continued to raise standards in patient care and administration.
Upon returning to Osun State, Chief Aluko played a pivotal role in developing nursing protocols at hospitals in Ilesa and Osogbo. His dedication earned him promotion to Principal Nursing Officer and later appointment as Osun State’s first Director of Nursing Services, a role in which he shaped policy, improved hospital systems, and championed the nursing profession.
In retirement, his passion for healthcare innovation led to the founding of Ogo Olu Convalesce and Maternity Home and Ogo Olu Mortuary and Embalming Services, both of which remain benchmarks in compassionate care and professional standards.
Born on October 23, 1937, to Pa Joseph Aluko Faari and Madam Olawunmi Aluko, Chief Aluko was the Onirewolede of Ilaje Ilesa. He shared a close bond with his siblings—Mr. Bode Aluko, Mr. Olaosebikan Aluko, Pastor Jide Aluko, and Commander Martins Kunle Aluko (rtd)—and was deeply loved by his extended family.
In 1962, he married Nurse Agnes Niniola Olawande of Ile-Ife. Their union was blessed with six children, in-laws, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Final burial rites will begin on Thursday, October 23, 2025, with a Service of Songs at his residence: P.1,2 Aluko Crescent, behind Sapaye Compound, off General Hospital Road, Ilesa. A Christian Wake Keep follows on Friday, October 24, and a Thanksgiving Service will be held on Saturday, October 25 at Methodist Church Cathedral, Otapete, Ilesa. Reception and entertainment of guests will take place the same day at Kings Mega Event Centre, University Road, Ilesa.
Chief ( Dr ) Olufemi Aluko Jp leaves behind a legacy of excellence, compassion, and service. His contributions to Nigerian healthcare will continue to inspire generations.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
