Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe continue to enjoy a long-standing and cordial diplomatic relationship founded on shared values, mutual respect, and common strategic interests within the Gulf of Guinea. As neighbouring Atlantic states, both countries recognise that sustained international diplomacy, maritime security, and regional cooperation are indispensable to peace, economic growth, and sustainable development across the sub-region and the African continent at large.
In furtherance of this commitment, the Honourable Minister, Christopher Musa, 5th February, in Abuja received the President of the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, His Excellency Carlos Vila Nova, on behalf of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, during the São Toméan leader’s official visit to Nigeria.
The Honourable Minister noted that the engagement represented a continuation of the enduring bilateral relationship between Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe, particularly anchored in their shared interests and responsibilities within the Gulf of Guinea. These ties have remained significant in advancing regional dialogue, cooperation, and collective responses to common challenges.
During the visit, both sides held frank and constructive discussions on strengthening collaboration in key priority areas. Particular emphasis was placed on regional and maritime security, trade and economic cooperation, and enhanced regional coordination, all aimed at promoting peace, safeguarding shared maritime resources, and improving economic opportunities for their respective peoples.
The Honourable Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening partnerships with neighbouring states and regional allies, stressing that cooperative diplomacy remains central to addressing transnational challenges and ensuring stability within the wider sub-region.
The meeting underscored the shared resolve of both countries to work closely together in advancing regional stability, mutual prosperity, and collective development through sustained diplomatic engagement and strategic collaboration.
