Minister of Environment Attends Inaugural Meeting on the Evaluation of Dams in Nigeria
In a bid to address critical environmental and infrastructural challenges, Honourable Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, participated in the inaugural meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Technical Committee on the Evaluation of Dams in Nigeria. The meeting, held earlier today, was organized by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation and brought together key figures from various ministries to discuss the evaluation and management of the country’s dams.
This collaborative effort saw the participation of the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Minister of National Planning and Budget, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, and Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development. Together, they formed a unified front to tackle the critical national issue of dam infrastructure, recognizing the role these dams play in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
Dams in Nigeria serve a wide range of purposes, including water supply, irrigation, hydropower, flood control, and enhancing environmental sustainability. However, environmental issues such as sedimentation, changes in local ecosystems, displacement of communities, and water pollution present significant challenges. The need for an all-encompassing evaluation of dam infrastructure is essential to ensure that these dams are safe and beneficial without degrading the environment.
The Honourable Minister of Environment reiterated the importance of adopting sustainable practices and effective water resource management as tools for mitigating environmental challenges. As Nigeria continues to experience the effects of climate change, dam safety and maintenance become vital to ensuring environmental protection while maximizing economic and agricultural potential. His call for the use of environmentally sound strategies will guide the Committee’s discussions on the future of dam operations in Nigeria.
With the expertise and collaboration of these ministers, there is hope for impactful solutions that will not only optimize dam infrastructure but also contribute to the broader goal of environmental sustainability in Nigeria. The technical committee will continue to work toward ensuring that Nigeria’s dam infrastructure remains a critical asset in promoting socio-economic development, enhancing environmental protection, and providing long-term water security.
