- COS is the commonest cause of anovulation and a leading cause of infertility.

- The causes of both conditions are currently unknown and there is no cure.
This March during Endometriosis Action Month – the UK’s leading laser specialist, LaserHQ is launching its third ‘Break The Taboo’ campaign – an annual initiative which aims to raise awareness, drive conversation and break down the stigmas and misconceptions around Endometriosis, PCOS and female hormone health.
According to Endometriosis UK, diagnosis can be difficult and often delayed because it manifests itself in various ways and shares symptoms with other conditions. Recent research shows that there is now an average of 7.5 years between women first seeing a doctor about their symptoms and receiving a firm diagnosis.
LaserHQ’s ‘Break the Taboo’ campaign is of particular importance to the company’s founder, Helen Quayle following a diagnosis of Endometriosis POD and Adenomyosis in 2020.
Since then, Helen has been passionate about making a change and raising awareness as she understands first-hand the impact the condition can have on someone’s life. It’s not often spoken about, but it’s a complex condition that affects an astonishing 1.5 million women in the UK, and an estimated 176 million worldwide.
According to Helen everyone’s experience of Endometriosis is different. Painful flare-ups, bloating, mood swings, hot sweats and fatigue were just some of her symptoms that were wrongly diagnosed for many years – often dismissed by healthcare professionals as signs of stress. It took a specialist to link the symptoms to her hormones and a diagnosis, then treatment soon followed.
One of the symptoms of Endometriosis and PCOS that Helen and her team have found to cause particular distress to individuals, is excessive hormonal hair growth – also known as Hirsutism.
Hirsutism is defined as the presence of terminal hair with male pattern distribution in women – where thick, dark hair can grow on areas such as the face, neck, chest, tummy, lower back, intimate areas and thighs. It’s estimated the condition affects anything up to 11% of all women globally – with prevalence in those with PCOS jumping to 65-75%.
As a result of her diagnosis and patterns the team could see emerging amongst their customers, the company offer blood work analysis and hormone testing services alongside their laser treatments to test individuals’ and help understand any hormone imbalances in people and how their hair growth is connected to this.
Everyone’s experience is unique, with different symptoms and side effects but they have found hormone imbalances have consistently been strongly connected with excessive hair growth, especially on the face. Many people go on to use the results of these tests to speak to their GP or healthcare specialists and start the process of getting a formal diagnosis for PCOS.
