The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a scathing disclaimer regarding the Law Faculty of Lead City University, Ibadan, declaring recent admissions into the program “void” and “illegal.”
In a statement released on Thursday by its Public Communications Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the Board revealed that it has been “inundated with accusations of dereliction” over the reported enrollment of students into the university’s Law program, despite a subsisting five-year suspension.
The controversy centers on a moratorium placed on the university by the Council of Legal Education (CLE). In June 2024, the CLE imposed a five-year ban on law admissions at Lead City University, citing inadequate infrastructure and repeated violations of the approved 50-student admission quota.
Despite this ban, reports emerged that the institution continued to offer slots to unsuspecting candidates. JAMB has now clarified that these admissions are entirely “unknown” to its system.
JAMB emphasized that any admission not processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS)—the only legally recognized platform for tertiary placements in Nigeria—is invalid.
“The Board unequivocally states that the said admissions were not conducted through CAPS,” the statement read. “Consequently, such admissions are void. The institution is not authorized to admit candidates into the programme until the expiration of the suspension.”
The Board also raised the alarm over a new tactic where universities attempt to “regularize” illegal admissions by transferring students to other institutions.
“Such would also not work,” Dr. Benjamin warned, noting that JAMB will not endorse any inter-university transfer for a student whose initial admission was not recorded on CAPS. He described the pursuit of such admissions as nothing more than “an exercise in futility.”
The Board urged affected individuals to disregard their current “fake” admission letters and register for the next Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to seek legitimate placement in accredited programs.
As of Friday, the management of Lead City University has not issued a formal rebuttal to JAMB’s declaration, though the university’s admission portal remains active for other courses.
