Nigeria’s drive toward sustainable healthcare received a major boost with the commissioning of the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital at Osun State University, a facility designed to strengthen medical training, research, and patient care within the country.
Speaking at the commissioning, Mrs Folorunso Alakija, philanthropist and business leader, described the project as the outcome of a deeply personal journey of faith and obedience.
“What began as a simple act of obedience years ago has, by God’s grace, become a place of healing, learning, and hope,” she said, noting that the hospital represents “the lives that will be touched, the minds that will be trained, and the futures that will be restored.”
The hospital, named in honour of Mrs Alakija and her husband, Mr Modupe Folarin Alakija, is expected to play a critical role in addressing gaps in Nigeria’s healthcare system by combining clinical services, medical research, and professional training under one roof.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Health Capacity
Health sector stakeholders at the event highlighted the importance of the facility at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with limited access to quality healthcare and the migration of medical professionals abroad. By supporting advanced training and research, the hospital is positioned to help retain talent and raise standards in medical practice.
Mrs Alakija emphasised that the vision was never a solitary effort, acknowledging the collective contribution behind the project.
“I am deeply thankful to my husband, Mr Modupe Folarin Alakija; to Famfa Oil Limited; and to every hand and heart that God used to bring this vision to life,” she said, adding that the journey reaffirmed her belief that “when God gives an instruction, He also provides the strength, the people, and the grace to fulfil it.”
National Recognition and Institutional Support
The commissioning was performed by Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, whose presence underscored the national significance of the project. Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke of Osun State also lent his support, alongside the leadership of Osun State University, traditional rulers, and development partners.
Mrs Alakija expressed appreciation to the Osun State Government and the university’s leadership, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, the Pro-Chancellor, and members of the Governing Council, for their partnership and commitment.
A Vision Beyond the Present
Looking to the future, Mrs Alakija said her hope is that the hospital will serve far beyond its immediate environment.
“My prayer is that this hospital will serve generations, raise excellent medical professionals, and become a place where compassion, knowledge, and healing meet,” she stated, adding that she believes it will be “a blessing to Nigeria and beyond.”
A Quiet Profile in Service
Mrs Folorunso Alakija is widely recognised as one of Africa’s leading philanthropists and business figures. Through initiatives spanning education, healthcare, and faith-based development, she has consistently focused on building institutions with long-term societal impact rather than short-term interventions.

The Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital now stands as one of her most significant healthcare contributions — a facility aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s medical future while offering hope to communities in need.
As Mrs Alakija concluded at the event:
“To God alone be all the glory.”
Dignitaries at the event included former Governors and ministers, Captains of Industries among others.
