In a decisive outcome at the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) biennial elections held in Abuja, veteran broadcaster has been elected Chairman of the , defeating by a resounding 62 votes to 9.
The election marks a significant moment for Nigeria’s broadcast industry, placing one of its most experienced hands at the helm of the sector’s foremost umbrella body.
Akiotu, a former Group Managing Director of DAAR Communications owners of AIT and Ray Power FM, steps into the role with decades of experience spanning both public and private broadcasting. His emergence is widely seen as a continuation of a rich legacy shaped by pioneers of Nigerian media, including the late , whose influence he paid glowing tribute to in his acceptance speech.
In a moment of statesmanship, Akiotu acknowledged his opponent, noting that both men represent “two sides of the same coin,” united by a shared commitment to advancing the broadcasting industry.
Delivering his acceptance speech, Akiotu reflected on the historical evolution of broadcasting in Nigeria, tracing its roots to the pioneering efforts of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who established Africa’s first television station, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV), in 1957 as replicated by BEN Television in Europe.
He also highlighted the institutional journey that led to the formation of BON—from earlier bodies such as SOBON, CEFASERO, and TON—culminating in its establishment during the historic .
Akiotu further acknowledged the role of Tony Momoh, whose 1987 keynote address reinvigorated BON into a vibrant and cohesive association.
Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming mandate, Akiotu pledged inclusive leadership, emphasising unity across public and private broadcasters.
“Today, we are not divided by choice; we are united by purpose,” he stated, calling for collective responsibility in shaping the future of Nigerian broadcasting.
He outlined key priorities for his tenure, including:
- Strengthening institutional sustainability
- Supporting digital transition across broadcast platforms
- Enhancing professional capacity and skills development
- Encouraging industry-wide collaboration
- Positioning BON as a thought leader in media and communication
He assured members that his administration would be open, consultative, and results-driven.
In his remarks, Akiotu expressed deep appreciation to Mike Itemuagbor, founder of M4S Communications, as well as the company’s board, management, and staff for their support throughout his campaign.
He also recognised the efforts of his campaign team and dedicated the victory to the entire BON membership and the Nigerian media industry at large.
