The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building financially resilient, globally competitive and future-ready universities through the National University Advancement Programme (NUAP), describing the initiative as a strategic strategy to strengthen institutional sustainability and promote long-term growth in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
The commitment was reiterated by the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, in a keynote address delivered on his behalf during the closing ceremony of the National University Advancement Programme training for university officials.
According to the minister, the programme represents more than the end of a training exercise, but a renewed national commitment to equipping Nigerian universities with the capacity, partnerships and institutional systems required to compete effectively in the global knowledge economy.
Dr. Alausa stressed that while the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to supporting higher education, universities must also strengthen their internal governance structures, cultivate strategic partnerships and deliberately engage their alumni to unlock new opportunities for research, innovation, scholarships, infrastructure development and sustainable institutional growth.
He explained that the National University Advancement Programme is not intended to replace government funding for higher education but to complement existing investments by creating additional avenues for sustainability, innovation, research support, scholarships and long-term institutional development.
The minister noted that NUAP was established through a partnership involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation and the Africa Finance Corporation to institutionalise professionally managed Advancement Offices across federal universities and inter-university centres.
According to him, the offices will coordinate alumni engagement, donor relations, endowment management, strategic communications, fundraising and institutional partnerships, thereby strengthening universities’ financial resilience, expanding research opportunities and enhancing their global visibility.
Dr. Alausa described university alumni as one of Nigeria’s greatest untapped assets, noting that many have distinguished themselves in business, science, medicine, technology, entrepreneurship and public service across the world.
He said stronger alumni engagement would translate into increased support for research, scholarships, mentorship opportunities, improved infrastructure, stronger institutional partnerships and greater innovation across Nigerian universities.
The minister added that the Federal Government’s vision is to build universities that are financially stronger, capable of long-term planning, driven by vibrant research ecosystems and globally competitive while remaining responsive to Nigeria’s development priorities.
He urged participants to return to their institutions and implement the knowledge acquired during the training by establishing systems that promote accountability, strengthen institutional trust, improve governance and enhance the overall student experience.
Dr. Alausa reaffirmed that the Federal Government’s education reform agenda under the Renewed Hope Agenda remains focused on strengthening institutions, expanding access to quality education and positioning the education sector as a catalyst for national development.
Also speaking at the event, Chairperson of the Technical Working Committee of the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation, Claire Jemide, described the Foundation as a strategic partner committed to transforming Nigeria’s higher education system through sustained investments in people, institutions and collaborative partnerships.
She said the Foundation has expanded its interventions from supporting outstanding students through the NHEF Scholars Programme to strengthening faculty development, healthcare leadership, university governance and institutional transformation.
According to Jemide, the University Advancement Programme, launched following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Federal Ministry of Education in January 2026, is designed to equip Nigerian universities with the knowledge, systems and strategies needed to strengthen alumni engagement, fundraising, communications and long-term institutional advancement.
The National University Advancement Programme brought together vice-chancellors, university administrators, advancement officers and senior officials from federal universities and inter-university centres across the country for intensive training on global best practices in institutional advancement, donor stewardship, alumni relations and sustainable university development.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to working closely with stakeholders and development partners to build a resilient, innovative and globally competitive higher education system capable of producing the skilled workforce, research and innovations required to drive Nigeria’s sustainable development.
