In a political climate marked by shifting alliances, pressing socio-economic challenges, and calls for renewed leadership, Côte d’Ivoire now has a fresh contender who blends grassroots activism with global influence. Dr. Ahoua Don Mello’s official declaration to run for the presidency is more than a campaign launch — it is a bold bid to redefine the nation’s political trajectory and assert a vision rooted in sovereignty, innovation, and inclusive development.
Dr. Mello’s political journey began in Paris, where he joined the Fourth Communist International before moving to the French Communist Party. In 1983, his commitment to political activism took him to the Communist Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PCCI), eventually helping to establish the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI). His academic career has been equally distinguished, teaching at numerous African universities and developing practical innovations such as Géopavé paving systems, wooden bricks, and coconut bitumen — inventions reflecting his drive for locally grounded solutions.
Between 2000 and 2010, Dr. Mello served as Director General of BNETD and earlier led Yamoussoukro Technopole. In 2010, then-President Laurent Gbagbo appointed him Minister of Infrastructure and government spokesperson, a role that put him at the centre of national policy. Following political upheaval and subsequent exile in 2011, he became a trusted adviser to African heads of state, notably as Special Adviser to Guinea’s President Alpha Condé from 2017 to 2021.
Since 2021, Dr. Mello has divided his time between Africa and Russia, building international networks as Adviser to the Russian Business Community, Vice President of the International Alliance of BRICS, and Executive Vice President of the PPACI. These roles have bolstered his global reach, enabling him to connect local priorities with broader geopolitical opportunities.
His presidential platform focuses on economic transformation, robust healthcare, quality education, women’s empowerment, and youth development. Committed to transparency and accountability, Dr. Mello describes himself as a socialist and sovereignist democrat — determined to defend Côte d’Ivoire’s autonomy while advancing the socio-economic rights of its citizens.
As the nation looks ahead to its next electoral contest, Dr. Mello’s candidacy signals a potential shift towards leadership that fuses home-grown solutions with international partnerships. For many Ivorians, his bid represents not just another political campaign, but a chance to usher in a new era of governance — one that is as pragmatic as it is principled.
