Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to religious liberty and democratic values, emphasizing that the nation stands firmly on constitutional guarantees that protect the rights of individuals across diverse faiths.
In a recent statement he personally signed, Tinubu highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to engage constructively with both Christian and Muslim leaders, underscoring a commitment to fostering dialogue and cooperation among Nigeria’s various religious communities.
In his words, ” Since taking office in 2023, the administration has been actively addressing security challenges that impact citizens regardless of their religious affiliations.”
President Tinubu stated that characterizing Nigeria as a religiously intolerant nation fails to reflect the reality of a country where religious freedom and tolerance remain core aspects of its identity.
He expressed concern about representations that overlook the government’s consistent and sincere attempts to protect the freedom of religion and belief for all Nigerians.
“Nigeria is a country built on constitutional guarantees designed to protect citizens of all faiths,” President Tinubu emphasized. “Our administration stands firmly against religious persecution and is dedicated to promoting a culture of tolerance and mutual respect.”
According to the President, his administration has also committed to collaborating with the United States government and the international community to enhance understanding and foster cooperation in protecting the rights of all religious groups. This partnership aims to promote a peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse religious landscapes he emphasized
Also captured in the statement, the President said in a climate where challenges persist, his administration seeks to reinforce the notion that Nigeria’s religious plurality is not a source of division, but rather a cornerstone of its collective identity.
He added that the government’s initiatives aim to ensure that all Nigerians can freely express their beliefs without fear of persecution, thus fortifying the democratic framework that underpins the nation.
As Nigeria continues to navigate its multifaceted social landscape, the government’s renewed focus on religious liberty serves as a reminder of its commitment to uphold democratic principles and ensure a peaceful future for all its citizens.
