The Cultural Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Yang Jianxing, has called on Nigerians to embrace the Chinese language, describing it as a strategic gateway to economic advancement, educational opportunities and cultural exchange.
Speaking at the 2026 International Chinese Language Day celebration in Abuja, Yang said Mandarin has grown into a vital global communication tool, increasingly shaping international cooperation and trade relations.
“Learning Chinese is an important pathway to understanding China and unlocking opportunities through mutually beneficial cooperation,” he said.
He noted that the language is now taught in more than 190 countries, with over 200 million learners worldwide, underscoring its expanding global relevance.
Yang further highlighted that 2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China, as well as the Year of China-Africa People-to-People Exchanges, both of which he said reinforce the need for stronger cultural and educational engagement.

Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Mohammed Bulama, described language as a critical instrument for diplomacy, trade and mutual understanding. He reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to promoting intercultural dialogue through its programming.
Bulama pointed to the launch of “Ni Hao China,” a weekly radio programme introduced in July 2025 in partnership with the Chinese Embassy, aimed at teaching Mandarin and promoting Chinese culture among Nigerian audiences.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (FCT Council), Grace Ike, said the event underscores the growing role of communication in strengthening bilateral relations.
She commended the Chinese Embassy for sustained engagement with journalists in the Federal Capital Territory, noting that the collaboration has enhanced cultural exchange and balanced reporting.
The event featured cultural performances from both Nigeria and China, reflecting the deepening ties between the two countries.
