Chad Announces Withdrawal from International Criminal Court

Chad has announced plans to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying the court’s effectiveness has been “limited” and uneven since it began operations more than two decades ago.

The decision was announced on Monday in a statement issued by a government spokesperson, who said the move followed a comprehensive review of the court’s performance.

“This decision is the result of an in-depth review of the functioning of the International Criminal Court since it began operating in 2002, as well as its record whose effectiveness remains limited and uneven across different regions,” the spokesperson said.

The government argued that its assessment found the court’s impact to be inconsistent across different parts of the world, prompting Chad’s decision to begin the withdrawal process.

The International Criminal Court, established in 2002 and headquartered in The Hague, prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.
