Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola Pays Tribute to President Muhammadu Buhari, Reflects on Diplomatic Legacy
Former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, has joined millions of Nigerians and members of the international community in mourning the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing him as a statesman of rare integrity and conviction whose life was wholly dedicated to the service of Nigeria.
In a statement issued following the announcement of President Buhari’s death, Ambassador Isola reflected on the life, leadership, and enduring legacy of the former President, under whose administration he was appointed High Commissioner to the Court of St James’s. He described President Buhari as a man of remarkable discipline, humility, and unwavering belief in national unity.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I join millions of Nigerians and the global community in mourning the passing of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” the statement began. “President Buhari was a statesman of remarkable conviction, whose life was defined by an unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, progress, and security.”
He further wrote: “His departure is not just a national loss; it is a historical punctuation. His life traversed decades of military and democratic governance, yet his persona remained consistent — marked by uncompromising integrity, personal simplicity, and a profound belief in national unity.”
Ambassador Isola highlighted key aspects of President Buhari’s time in office, noting that his presidency from 2015 to 2023 was characterised by bold efforts to tackle corruption, strengthen national institutions, and invest in infrastructural development. He commended Buhari’s leadership as one that set a clear standard for public service, rooted in values that resonated both at home and abroad.
“It was during his administration that I had the privilege and honour to serve as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 2021 to 2023,” he said. “In that role, I witnessed first-hand the quiet resolve with which President Buhari engaged international diplomacy firm in his conviction, yet humble in his approach.”
Ambassador Isola also recognised the dignity and clarity with which President Buhari represented Nigeria on the global stage. “He carried Nigeria’s image abroad with a certain stoic dignity, and his stance on anti-corruption and national discipline resonated with global partners, especially in an era when moral courage was becoming rare.”
During his tenure as High Commissioner, Ambassador Isola made significant strides in strengthening Nigeria–UK relations, notably standing firmly for the nation during the COVID-19 pandemic and the controversial travel restrictions imposed on African countries. He actively engaged with UK authorities and diplomatic counterparts, advocating for equity and mutual respect during a time of global uncertainty.
He also played a key role in facilitating the return of looted Nigerian artefacts, engaging with British institutions on matters of cultural restitution — a cause President Buhari strongly supported. Furthermore, Ambassador Isola is remembered for his direct engagement with a disruptive situation at the Nigerian High Commission in London, where his calm and proactive response helped restore order and reaffirm the dignity of the mission.
Reflecting on his appointment, he stated, “His appointment of capable hands to represent Nigeria abroad reflected his vision for a country respected for its values and contributions to global peace and development. His trust in me to serve as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom remains one of the greatest honours of my career.”

He concluded with a prayer for the late President and condolences to his family and the Nigerian people. “President Buhari’s legacy as a soldier, statesman, and patriot will continue to inspire generations. His simplicity, humility, and unwavering love for Nigeria endeared him to many, even in the face of challenges.
“On behalf of myself and my family, I extend my deepest condolences to the Buhari family, the government, and the people of Nigeria. I also commiserate with his associates, friends, and all those who were touched by his exemplary life.
“We will continue to honour his memory by upholding the values of integrity, service, and patriotism that he so dearly championed.
“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his family and the nation the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
Signed:
Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, OFR
