Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry Receives Dignitaries as Nation Pays Tribute to Late President Buhari
ABUJA — 16 July 2025
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday welcomed a delegation of diaspora dignitaries who arrived in Abuja to sign the official condolence register following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

The delegation — comprising Prince Ade Omole, Dr George Agbakahi, Professor Ali Alao, and Dr Ruqayya Ahmed — gathered at the ministry headquarters in a solemn moment of national reflection. The visit, marked by silent tribute and interfaith prayers, underscored Buhari’s enduring influence across political, religious and generational divides.
Both Muslim and Christian prayers were offered in a symbolic demonstration of unity — a gesture reflective of the late president’s own emphasis on national cohesion. Members of the delegation spoke briefly after signing, praising Buhari as a principled leader whose austere approach to governance and unflinching stance against corruption helped shape Nigeria’s political trajectory.
“President Buhari was a patriot in the purest sense,” one member noted. “His legacy of discipline, integrity, and public service will continue to resonate — not only within Nigeria but among the global diaspora who valued his commitment to national rebirth.”
Born in 1942 in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari rose to prominence as a military leader and later returned as a democratically elected president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023. Though often a polarising figure, he was widely respected for his personal frugality, anti-graft agenda, and determination to restore trust in public institutions.
The Foreign Ministry’s condolence book has become a focal point for international and local tributes, reflecting Buhari’s stature in both domestic and foreign policy circles. His tenure saw a recalibration of Nigeria’s diplomatic posture, especially across Africa and with major global partners, where he was regarded as a voice of stability.
As the nation mourns, tributes continue to pour in from world leaders, diplomats, civil society, and citizens. For many, Buhari’s passing marks the end of a significant era in Nigerian statecraft — one defined by a call to service and a rigorous, if controversial, vision of national renewal.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
