Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday visited former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi at his Abuja residence, a day after emerging as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election.
Atiku, accompanied by former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and other party leaders, met Amaechi amid tensions following the party’s presidential primary held on Wednesday in Abuja.
The ADC declared Atiku winner of the contest after he polled 1,846,370 votes to defeat Amaechi, who secured 504,117 votes, and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, who received 177,120 votes. Former Senate President David Mark later presented the party’s flag to Atiku at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
Speaking after the exercise, Atiku appealed to aggrieved members to unite behind the party, insisting that “there are no winners and no losers.” He also urged Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen to join him in “the fight to save our democracy and our country” ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen reportedly rejected the outcome of the primary, citing alleged irregularities in the voting process. Details of Thursday’s closed-door meeting between Atiku and Amaechi were not made public as of the time of filing this report.
