A group of stakeholders in Oyo State’s All Progressives Congress (APC) is advocating for zonal balance in the party’s 2027 gubernatorial election, citing electoral arithmetic and fairness.
The stakeholders argue that Ibadan zone has dominated executive power since 1999, producing four governors and one deputy governor, while Oyo and Ibarapa zones have been excluded from both positions.
‘Granting the 2027 gubernatorial ticket to one of the zones yet to produce a governor would achieve equilibrium without diminishing Ibadan’s enduring influence,’ said Chief M A Adedokun, a stakeholder.
Citing APC membership registration figures, they claim that Oyo, Ogbomoso, Oke-Ogun, and Ibarapa zones collectively represent a decisive numerical bloc within the party.
‘The call for rotational balance is neither confrontational nor exclusionary. It’s an appeal grounded in constitutional pragmatism, electoral mathematics, and democratic fairness,’ Adedokun added.
The stakeholders are urging party leadership to consider a governorship candidate from one of these zones in 2027, with the deputy governorship slot going to Ibadan, to achieve equilibrium and maximize electoral viability.
The move is seen as a bid to address perceived marginalization, strengthen party unity, and ensure APC victory in the state.”
