The Federal Government has intensified its partnership with the United Kingdom to equip Nigerian youths with globally competitive skills through expanded Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), digital education, and apprenticeship programmes aimed at improving workforce readiness and employment opportunities.
Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this during a bilateral meeting with UK Minister of State for Skills, Baroness Jacqui Smith, held on the sidelines of the Education World Forum 2026 in London.
The meeting centred on strengthening cooperation between both countries in skills development, TVET reforms, digital learning, and industry-focused apprenticeship initiatives as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to Alausa, the Federal Government is repositioning technical and vocational education as a major driver of industrial growth, innovation, and job creation by aligning education policies with labour market realities and emerging global economic trends.
He explained that the administration is prioritising critical sectors such as clean energy, healthcare, engineering, digital technology, and artificial intelligence to ensure Nigerian youths are equipped for future employment opportunities both locally and internationally.
The minister noted that Nigeria is implementing a modern skills development framework built around quality assurance, globally recognised accreditation, stronger industry participation, and structured apprenticeship pathways capable of meeting evolving workforce demands.
Alausa further revealed that discussions also focused on expanding collaboration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom through partnerships involving Federal Technical Colleges, the National Board for Technical Education, IQM, and other relevant institutions.
The proposed collaboration is expected to support curriculum development, staff exchange programmes, accreditation alignment, and skills-matching initiatives designed to improve employability and technical competence among Nigerian students and trainees.
Both countries also agreed on plans for UK skills institutions to visit Nigeria to jointly develop programmes in clean energy, healthcare, engineering, digital innovation, and artificial intelligence.
Discussions additionally covered apprenticeship models that would better connect training with industry demand while ensuring quality standards and efficient programme duration.
The engagement also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the public perception and attractiveness of TVET by creating clearer career progression pathways and strengthening industry recognition for technical skills, drawing lessons from reforms being implemented under Skills England in the United Kingdom.
On global education financing, Alausa, who serves on the board of the Global Partnership for Education, called for sustained UK support for the GPE 2026–2030 Replenishment Campaign, which Nigeria is set to co-host alongside Italy during the United Nations General Assembly 2026 in September.
Responding, Baroness Smith commended Nigeria’s ongoing education reforms and expressed support for deeper bilateral cooperation in skills development. She also pledged to advocate continued UK backing for the Global Partnership for Education ahead of the upcoming replenishment campaign.
The meeting further underscores the growing education and skills partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom as both countries seek to expand opportunities for young people and strengthen workforce competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global economy.
