Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign his position in the coming days following approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pursue a governorship ambition.
The development was disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja by the minister’s Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Tunji Bolaji. He said the anticipated resignation reflects Adelabu’s intention to conclude key initiatives in the power sector while ensuring a smooth transition.
According to Bolaji, the minister met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, where he presented a comprehensive report on his stewardship over the past two and a half years. The president reportedly commended Adelabu’s performance, particularly his role in laying a policy foundation for long-term reforms in the electricity sector.
Central to the presentation was the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), designed to drive sustainable development, expand electricity access, and strengthen sector efficiency. Adelabu also highlighted efforts to stabilise power generation, enhance transmission infrastructure, and improve service delivery across the value chain.
The briefing also addressed ongoing challenges, including recent drops in generation linked to gas supply constraints, pipeline maintenance, and outstanding obligations to suppliers.
Bolaji said the minister expressed appreciation to the president for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to the continued development of Nigeria’s power sector even as he prepares to exit office.
