As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the internal democracy of our political parties has taken center stage.
Citizens, civil society, and party members are increasingly demanding transparency, and for good reason. For a nation striving to solidify its democratic standing, the credibility of the general election is entirely dependent on the sincerity of the party primaries that precede it.
When party processes are flawed, the entire democratic foundation begins to fracture.
The Problem with Mathematically Unbelievable Results!
Consider a hypothetical, yet all-too-familiar scenario where a political party boasts for example – 1,000,000 registered members in an internal election. The announced results claim that exactly 700,000 members voted for a single, preferred aspirant (candidate), while an active, high-profile rival received exactly zero votes.
To any rational observer, this is a mathematical and sociological impossibility in a contested election.
Registered Party Members: 1,000,00
Votes for Sole Nominee: 700,000
Votes for Opponents: 0
Unaccounted / Non-Voters: 300,000 (An impossibly perfect, round figure)
In advanced democracies, a 100% or near-100% sweep of thousands of votes only occurs under one condition: when a candidate runs completely unopposed. If multiple candidates are on the ballot, even fringe or protest aspirants capture a slice of the electorate.
When an active, multi-candidate primary yields a total shutout of 700,000 to zero, it is not a sign of “super consensus.” Rather, it serves as an immediate red flag indicating either electoral manipulation or severe systemic coercion.
Furthermore, the recording of exactly 300,000 non-voters – an impossibly perfect round number; deepens the skepticism. True human systems do not naturally generate flawless, rounded figures at the ballot box.
The Integrity Litmus Test:
If a candidate deliberately and legally seeks to validate a result where active opponents score zero out of hundreds of thousands of votes, that result cannot pass the test of democratic sincerity. It damages the credibility of the party and insults the intelligence of the electorate.
Learning from Global Standards
Advanced nations are far from perfect; they grapple with structural flaws, campaign finance issues, and gerrymandering. However, the crucial difference lies in how their institutions respond. When internal anomalies or discrepancies arise in Western political processes, they are immediately confronted and resolved within competent jurisdictional platforms without delay. Parties value their integrity because they know a tainted primary inevitably leads to a defeated or legally disqualified candidate in the general election.
Nigerian political parties must adopt this institutional maturity. The current wave of internal party disputes ahead of 2027 is a clear warning sign.
Moving Forward: Sincerity Over Pretext
Political parties must realise that manufactured uniformity is a liability, not an asset. Instead of fabricating absolute victories that invite endless litigation and public cynicism, leadership must foster genuine, open competition.
Reducing the volume of post-primary legal challenges requires proactive honesty today. If Nigeria is to achieve its vision of free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, the journey must begin inside the party secretariats. True democratic strength is measured by the fairness of the contest, not the perfection of a manufactured result.
