A distinguished Senator of Africa’s most populous nation has made a statement on Monday to mark World Teachers’ Day, designated by the United Nations to honour teachers globally. He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the profession through tangible support and policy action.
Senator Austin Akobundu, representing Abia Central in the National Assembly and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) flagbearer for the seat in the 2027 general elections, has described teachers as the “ultimate moulders of a progressive and prosperous future for every society.”
He highlighted his sponsorship of 113 constituents on full three-year scholarships to the National Teachers Institute (NTI), a N21 million investment aimed at training qualified teachers and deepening the pool of educators shaping the future of children.
Referencing this year’s theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” Akobundu said it reflects his documented efforts to elevate the status of teachers. He pledged continued support for educators, noting: “Your sacrifices, dedication, and patriotism will never be forgotten.”
“Happy World Teachers’ Day,” he concluded.
