From grassroots politics to public administration, another Nigerian woman takes on greater responsibility as Lagos strengthens its governance institutions.
Across the world, women continue to demonstrate that effective political leadership is not determined by gender but by vision, competence and commitment to public service. From Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female head of state, to Germany’s Angela Merkel and New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern, women have occupied some of the world’s most influential political offices, helping to reshape governance and national development.
Yet across Africa, women’s representation in political decision-making remains a challenge, particularly within institutions responsible for grassroots development and public administration.
In Nigeria, Lagos State has taken another step towards broadening women’s participation in governance following the formal swearing-in of Aarebirin Hon. Princess Dr. Folashade Olabanji-Oba as a member of the Lagos State Local Government Service Commission.
The ceremony, conducted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday, 19 October 2026, at Lagos House, Ikeja, also witnessed the inauguration of other commission members and newly appointed permanent secretaries.
Princess Olabanji-Oba, the immediate past Vice Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, brings experience in grassroots administration, political mobilisation, community development and women’s empowerment.
Her public service journey extends beyond Ikorodu. She has held several leadership responsibilities within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and affiliated political organisations, including the APC Professional Women Council, APC Amazons and the Asiwaju Distinguished Ambassadors Movement.
She has also been involved in national local government leadership structures, advocating stronger participation, institutional development and opportunities for women in political decision-making.
Outside politics, the entrepreneur and media consultant is recognised for her philanthropic activities through the Shelter of Grace Foundation, supporting widows, disadvantaged families, vulnerable communities and initiatives promoting youth and women’s economic empowerment.
During the inauguration, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised professionalism, accountability, integrity and measurable service delivery, reminding appointees that public office carries responsibilities beyond personal recognition.

The commission, chaired by Hon. Akeem Bamgbola, has an important role in strengthening personnel administration and institutional effectiveness across Lagos State’s local government system.

For Princess Olabanji-Oba, the appointment represents both recognition of her public service experience and a fresh opportunity to contribute to governance beyond her previous local council responsibilities.

As Nigeria prepares for another electoral cycle in 2027, her progression also highlights the continuing importance of creating pathways for women to move from political participation into positions of institutional responsibility.
Ultimately, the success of such appointments will be measured not simply by representation, but by improved administration, stronger institutions and meaningful benefits for the communities they serve.
