In a historic moment, four more Nigerians have made significant political strides abroad by winning elections in the United States and Australia. The victories of Dr. Oye Owolewa, Chiaka Barry, Segun Adeyina, and Yemi Mobolade exemplify the growing influence and accomplishments of Nigerians on the global stage. NiDCOM Chairman and CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, congratulated the newly elected officials, applauding their achievements and the inspiration they bring to both the Nigerian diaspora and their communities.
Dr. Oye Owolewa – District of Columbia, USA
Dr. Oye Owolewa, a licensed pharmacist, was re-elected as the Shadow Representative for the District of Columbia under the Democratic Party. In his role, Dr. Owolewa continues to advocate for full congressional representation for the residents of Washington, D.C., an area currently without voting representation in Congress. His re-election reaffirms the community’s trust in his efforts to highlight D.C.’s unique governance issues and push for statehood. Dr. Owolewa is known for his dedication to healthcare advocacy, combining his background in pharmacy with a commitment to public service. He expressed deep gratitude to his supporters and pledged to continue fighting for the rights and voices of his constituents.
Chiaka Barry – Ginninderra District, Australian Capital Territory
Chiaka Barry was elected into the Legislative Assembly of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), representing the Ginninderra District under the Liberal Party. Barry is a seasoned legal officer with expertise in litigation, policy development, alternative dispute resolution, and legislative drafting. Her passion for community service has driven her to seek a position where she can directly impact policy and improve the lives of those in her district. Segun Adeyina – Georgia, USA
Segun Adeyina, an experienced IT professional and long-time community leader, was re-elected as State Representative of District 110 in Georgia. With over 25 years in IT program and project management, Adeyina has worked with Fortune 500 companies, including General Motors, Ascension Health System, and Hewlett Packard/Cap Gemini. His extensive experience in both corporate and community spheres has informed his approach to governance, focusing on economic development, education, and infrastructure. Adeyina’s re-election speaks to his consistent advocacy for his district and his ability to address the challenges facing his constituents in Georgia.
Adeyemi Mobolade – Mayor of Colorado Springs, USA
Adeyemi Mobolade made history in 2023 as the first Black person elected Mayor of Colorado Springs, Colorado. A Nigerian-American businessman and community leader, Mobolade’s election was a historic milestone for the city, representing progress in its political landscape. With a background in entrepreneurship and community engagement, Mobolade brings a unique approach to his role, prioritizing inclusive growth, economic revitalization, and public safety. His commitment to fostering a vibrant, diverse, and economically prosperous city has already begun reshaping Colorado Springs. His election has not only marked a symbolic victory but also set a new precedent for inclusive leadership in the city.
Also Gabe Okoye won reelection in Georgia District 102.
